Michelle Liu

Michelle Liu is a professional engineer who uses she/her pronouns and identifies as a Queer and racialized woman. Engineers Canada named Michelle one of thirteen EDI Leaders in Engineering Workplaces in 2021-2022. Among other endeavours to advance EDI, Michelle co-created and co-funds the Liu-Kennington Award for the 2SLGBTQ+ Engineering Community at the University of Waterloo, where she received her Honours BASc and MASc in Civil Engineering. After working in construction and design for various national and multi-national consulting engineering firms, Michelle is now pursuing her law degree (JD) and PhD in civil engineering simultaneously at the University of Ottawa. Michelle’s civil engineering PhD work focuses on critically examining engineering design and professional practices through an equity, diversity, and inclusion framework. Other ways Michelle is promoting EDI in both the engineering and legal professions include serving as an ONWiE mentor, Chair of the Waterloo Recent Engineering Alumni Council, and as a member of the Equity Advisory Group of the Law Society of Ontario. Michelle’s research and leadership earned her the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship and the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship in the same year. During her time as a University of Waterloo student, Michelle’s extensive volunteer contributions on campus and in the community earned her a Certificate of Recognition from the Mayor of Waterloo and her title as a Kitchener-Waterloo Women of the Yearfinalist.
