Abstract
In this presentation we will demonstrate through examples how random numbers can be useful to approximate quantities of interest. We will focus on using random numbers to estimate surface areas. We will then explain how random numbers are generated on a computer. If time permits, we will briefly discuss another kind of random numbers called “quasi-random numbers”, as they can sometimes be used to construct approximations that are more precise than those constructed from random numbers.
