This peer-reviewed paper, published in Youth (2025), presents findings from a study led by the Youth & Innovation Project on how to better understand and measure the social and environmental impacts of youth service programs. Using interviews with young participants and community partners across six Canadian programs, the study applied and refined an impact framework to assess strategies such as direct impact, socialization, influence, and systems change.

Key insights show that programs most often capture short-term awareness and action, while systemic change is rarely measured. The paper offers practical recommendations for designing youth service programs that both recognize immediate contributions and support lasting social impact.
