Some years ago, members of the German-Canadian community approached the Waterloo Centre for German Studies with an idea to collect the oral history of German-speaking immigrants to Waterloo region, especially those who had arrived after the Second World War. Now, some 120 interviews later, a book of essays based on the interviews has been published. Edited by Dr. Mat Schulze, Dr. Grit Liebscher, and Dr. Sebastian Siebel-Achenbach, the fourteen essays have been co-written by professors and students. Each essay explores a particular aspect of the immigrant experience - the sorrow of leaving a homeland behind, the challenges of making one's way in a strange country, the tension between living in one culture and missing another.

Where to Purchase
