Student statuses from fall 2022 and earlier

All co-op students have employment statuses assigned to them throughout the duration of their co-op degree to help us track where they are in the co-op process. View the current WaterlooWorks student statuses.

EI Employed: Interview Process
You have received employment via the WaterlooWorks employment process.
EJ Employed: Jointly Arranged
You have secured employment outside the co-op interview process with the help of Co-operative Education or with an employer who has previously hired from Waterloo.

If a student secures employment this way and completes the work term successfully, they will receive credit for that work experience (if the job meets faculty work experience requirements).

*Note: For Spring 2021 and onward, the EJ status is used solely to identify students who choose to pursue a Waterloo Experience (WE) Accelerate work term.”

ES Employed: Student Arranged
You have secured employment outside the co-op interview process that has been approved by Co-operative Education.

If a student secures employment this way and completes the work term successfully, they will receive credit for that work experience (if the job meets faculty work experience requirements).

ER Employed: Returning
You are returning to a previous employer on your next scheduled work term and this has been approved by Co-operative Education

If a student secures employment this way and completes the work term successfully, they will receive credit for that work experience (if the job meets faculty work experience requirements).

UI Unemployed: Interview Process
You are searching for employment via the co-op interview process. You may search and apply for jobs on the WaterlooWorks co-op job board.

Note: If you are off-campus (e.g., on exchange or a double work term) you may be assessed a UI status but be unable to apply for co-op jobs in WaterlooWorks if you do not request off-campus interview support.

UA UnemployedAwaiting Decision
You have secured, or in the final stages of securing, employment external to the co-op employment process, and in the co-op review process.

This status is enacted when you submit an Arrange Own Job Form in WaterlooWorks and it is under review. Please note, your status will remain as UI if your Arranged Own Job has been added to your ranking form. Visit our Arrange Own Job page to learn more about the process around your job’s status

Note: Students assigned this status are still able to access much of the functionality in WaterlooWorks (e.g., message a co-op advisor, submit an AOJ, book appointments with CCA, view postings on other job boards on WaterlooWorks including “other,” “full time and permanent” and “CampusConnect”) but will not be permitted to search for and apply to current co-op jobs.

UO Unemployed: On Own Self-Imposed
You have been granted a leave of absence and will not receive credit for the work term.

US Unemployed: Student Arranged
Students receive this status if they have not been fully engaged in the co-op process or have received a consequence that denies access to the WaterlooWorks co-op job board. You must arrange your own job or discuss a status change with your co-op advisor.

Reasons for this status include:

  • Not participating in the co-op interview process
  • Not responding to multiple Co-operative Education or employer inquiries
  • Not applying to any jobs by the first day of final exams
  • Not complying with a program regulation or procedure
  • Missing multiple interviews without cause
  • Not obtaining approval to decline an employment opportunity
  • Reneging on a previously agreed-upon offer of employment (Note: a renege on an employment offer for your final co-op work term may result in being assessed a UU status by your faculty)
  • Failing to honour a commitment to work for an employer or to return to an employer for a second work term
  • Condition for approval of a sequence change request

Students who wish to contest this status are able to file a petition or a grievance under Policy 70.

UU Unemployed: On Own University-Imposed
This status is assigned on behalf of your Faculty to a student who has not met the requirements of the co-op employment process and/or the work term, or is being reprimanded for a non-academic offence as defined by Policy 71 (e.g., reneging on a co-op job in the final work term).

You will not receive credit for the work term (a grade of NCR will be registered on your academic record on Quest).

Note: Students assigned this status are still able to access much of the functionality in WaterlooWorks (e.g., message a co-op advisor, submit an AOJ, book appointments with CCA, view postings on other job boards on WaterlooWorks including “other”, “full time and permanent” and “CampusConnect”) but will not be permitted to search for and apply to current co-op jobs.

F Failed Work Term
This status is assessed when students have not met the requirements for the interview process or the work term. Reasons for this status include:
  • Failing to show up for work
  • Leaving employer without approval
  • Dismissal from job
  • Unacceptable or unethical behaviour during a work term based on an investigation conducted by Co-operative Education in consultation with the student's faculty.

You will not receive credit for the work term (a grade of NCR will be registered on your academic record on Quest and your transcript as well as your WaterlooWorks application package) and your faculty may require you to withdraw from the co-op program.

X On Exchange
You are on an exchange term at an educational institution outside Canada. Your status will be changed to UI once you complete the "Off-campus support > Pre Interview support details - while on academic exchange" form by selecting "Submit a Form" from your Dashboard.

If you will be returning to a previous employer or arranging your own job, you can have your status updated at any time.
