Prof. Alice Kuzniar will be teaching a new course on German transnational film in Winter Term 2015. GER 359: Transnational Film, Intercultural Encounters will explore recent German cinema's involvement with other cultures.

June 11, 2014 was a special day for David John: in the morning convocation ceremony he was named Distinguished Professor Emeritus, and that evening he was presented with the German Order of Merit by Germany's Consul General, Walter Stechel.

There are many conferences and academic events for graduate students, but very few for undergrads. Barbara Schmenk from the University of Waterloo, along with Christine Lehleiter (University of Toronto) and Ulrike Kugler (Goethe-Institut Toronto) have organized the Undergraduate Colloquium in German Studies, a one-day conference exclusively for undergraduates involved in German studies.

As part of its search for the next Diefenbaker Memorial Chair in German Literary Studies, the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies is pleased to announce 2014 Diefenbaker Lecture Series: Literary Studies for the 21st Century. Five colleagues from across Canada and the United States will be travelling to Waterloo in March and April to present their vision of how the study of literature can be of interest to both academics and a wider audience.

In conjunction with the Centre for Career Action, the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies organized a workshop on non-academic careers on 16 January 2014. Six students attended the session led by Career Advisor Elisabeth Adrian.
