Leonie Hölderle

Joint MA in Intercultural German Studies
Leonie Hölderle

Where and what did you study before you came to Germanic and Slavic Studies at the University of Waterloo?

Before the IcGS-program, I did my Bachelor of Arts in Culture and Economy at the University of Mannheim. My major here was English Studies with a minor in business administration.

What are your interests in German Studies?

I am primarily interested in cultural studies and language teaching (both in a German and an English context). I aim to become an educator and work in (language) education or a cultural institution.

Why did you choose the University of Waterloo?

I did not intentionally choose Waterloo. Instead, I chose the IcGS-program between UWaterloo and the University of Mannheim because I, for one, wanted to go abroad for my master's, and also due to the program's focus on the intercultural relations between Canada and Germany.

Do you already know what you want to write your thesis on?

Currently, I am thinking about writing about Multilingual Language Education and Translanguaging. However, I still have to find the exact focus I want to concentrate on since one could write a whole book about that topic.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to become an artist, just like my godfather.

What is a fun fact about you?

After high school/my Abitur, I spent almost one and a half years in China to teach English. That is where I found my love for teaching.
