Statement from Associate Vice-President, International, Dr. Ian Rowlands, on recent Canada-India relations

Friday, September 22, 2023

We are aware that the recent diplomatic tensions between India and Canada have caused concern among many of our Indian students, faculty, staff and anyone with academic connections to India. We understand that these international matters can create a sense of uncertainty and apprehension, especially for those who are far from home.

First and foremost, we want to assure you that we are keeping a close watch on developments and are committed to supporting you during this time. For those who may be feeling unsettled or anxious, we would like to remind you that resources for mental health support are available. Campus Wellness is equipped to provide assistance to students and our Employee and Family Assistance Program are available for employees. We encourage you to make use of these invaluable resources. Please reach out to your departmental and Faculty supports, including your academic advisor or your academic supervisor if the situation means you are struggling academically.

If you are planning any travel to India for University-related activities, whether for study, research, or other professional reasons, we remind you of the link for international travel registration, which will then give you access to tailored advice and support.  This will help ensure your travel plans are as smooth and secure as possible, particularly in the current diplomatic climate.

For any immediate concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Waterloo International at waterloo.international@uwaterloo.ca.
