Waterloo has developed a reputation for applied artificial intelligence, and behind that reputation is one of Canada’s premier AI research organizations: The Waterloo Data and Artificial Intelligence Institute. Not only does it sharpen the cutting edge of AI technologies, but it plays a key role in helping companies apply these technologies across industries.

A new study of multiple large language models (LLMs) found that when users asked chatbots for advice, they were more likely to make suggestions that favour the status quo over alternatives. The tendency of artificial intelligence to default to more common advice could be bad news for the climate.

Researchers from the University of Waterloo assessed 11 LLMs for their tendency to prefer existing conditions over change, known as status quo bias. Well-known in psychology research, this is the first paper to apply the concept to climate advice from LLMs. The team evaluated more than 7,500 queries spanning multiple domains, including vehicle purchases, recipes, home heating, and climate-relevant policy trade-offs. Each of these queries was tested on at least six different LLMs for a total of nearly 55,000 prompts. Where climate trade-offs are possible in policy, platforms reinforced decisions the user already made with double the frequency.

University of Waterloo students put the city on the map last week with two stand-out events, Waterloo Tech Week and Hack the North. Both showcased the dynamic Waterloo tech ecosystem and its entrepreneurial energy, bringing together business founders, talent spotters, students, startups, venture capitalists and hackers from around the world.

Now in its 13th year, Hack the North, Canada’s largest student-led hackathon, welcomed more than 1,000 hackers who spent 36 straight hours building, collaborating and connecting with peers and industry. Building on the success and spirit of Hack the North, the student organizing team launched Waterloo Tech Week in 2025, creating an event that is open to anyone interested in connecting with the startup community in the Waterloo Region.

A psychology study that once took five or six weeks to build can now be created in less than an hour. Jacob Oliveira, a PhD student in the School of Psychology, developed the new tool by aiming to solve his own research challenge. Now his solution has grown into a venture shaped in part by Waterloo’s culture of experimentation and entrepreneurship.

“I came here to study people, not to build software,” he says. “But that’s what the research kept demanding of me, until I decided to fix that.”

Safety protections built into some of the world's most widely used artificial intelligence (AI) models can be stripped away with alarming ease, according to a new international study.

The research team, led by the University of Waterloo and FAR.AI, a non-profit AI security research group, rigorously tested 21 of the most popular open-weight large language models (LLMs) and found they could all be tampered with despite their built-in safeguards.

The holes in even the best protections currently available raise concerns open-weight models could be used to wage mass disinformation campaigns, create sophisticated email scams or produce step-by-step instructions to make hazardous chemicals.

AI coding agents use a distinctive style of English. The terms exist in software engineering and other technical areas, but how frequently Claude uses them, the way it combines them and the compressed style it uses are distinctive. Professor Yuntian Deng, from the Cheriton School of Computer Science at the University of Waterloo created a translator to help readers better understand Claude’s information-dense outputs. Professor Deng answers some questions about Claudish and his new translator, which has received over a million views on X.

Rather than competing on the size of AI models, Canada can lead the global AI revolution by educating engineers and leaders who build trustworthy systems from the ground up. The Waterloo Engineering dean argues that if every graduate gained real-world experience deploying AI safely in organizations, Canada would create one of the world's most trusted and AI-ready workforces.

University of Waterloo researchers are using AI and machine learning to predict how fires behave in modern homes, where energy-efficient construction and new furniture materials create deadly conditions unknown to traditional fire safety codes. The system could transform how emergency responders tackle evacuations, building codes are designed, and toxic smoke hazards are managed.
