At the University of Waterloo, FluidAI, a company co-founded by alumnus Youssef Helwa (MASc ’17), is transforming post-operative care through AI-powered monitoring systems that help clinicians detect complications such as leaks and infections earlier in the recovery process. Originally focused on a proprietary hardware platform for monitoring patients after abdominal surgery, FluidAI’s system has evolved to integrate electronic health record data, enabling it to predict broader complications like respiratory depression and sepsis. After receiving FDA clearance in the United States, the company is now expanding globally, with deployments across Canada and the Middle East. Based in the Kitchener-Waterloo region, FluidAI continues to draw talent from the University of Waterloo ecosystem and manufacture its hardware in Canada, contributing to the region’s growing reputation as a med-tech innovation hub.
