New dean appointed for Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics
Dr. Jochen Koenemann, an expert in combinatorial optimization, to serve as 13th dean

Dr. Jochen Koenemann has been appointed as the 13th dean of the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics, beginning a five-year term on July 1, 2025. A renowned researcher in theoretical computer science and operations research, Koenemann has developed optimization tools used in life-saving pediatric surgeries at SickKids Hospital and collaborated with Amazon to enhance delivery efficiency. He earned his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon and joined Waterloo in 2003, eventually becoming full professor and chair of the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization. His leadership experience and strong industry partnerships position him to strengthen the Faculty’s interdisciplinary initiatives. Supported by faculty and approved by university leadership, Koenemann succeeds Dr. Mark Giesbrecht. He aims to harness the Faculty’s unique role in North America to address global challenges through innovative mathematical approaches.
