Creating opportunities for international experiences

Tuesday, March 25, 2025

When beloved Arts academic advisor Eric Breugst (BA ’89, MA ’93) took early retirement to pursue his lifelong love for international travel, he shared that passion with students by establishing the Eric Breugst International Exchange Award. Wishing to promote greater global awareness among students, Breugst’s gift made it easier for them to participate in study abroad experiences.

International experience is increasingly important in our globalized world. In one of his roles as International Exchange Advisor, Breugst saw first-hand how young people can thrive from working across different environments and cultures. The University of Waterloo offers many opportunities for students to study and work abroad, but rising travel and cost of living expenses can put these enriching opportunities out of reach for many students.

Not only does Breugst’s scholarship alleviate the financial burden associated with international travel, it provides students with the opportunity broaden their horizons, experience new cultures and develop crucial global awareness skills.

One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been the opportunity to connect with fellow global citizens from diverse backgrounds. These interactions have deepened my understanding of people and business, two relevant aspects of my academic studies.

“[This scholarship] has had a direct and positive impact on my academic pursuits and has allowed me to create lasting memories that will shape my perspective for years to come,” says Jessica, an Arts and Business student studying French and International Studies. “One of the most rewarding aspects of this journey has been the opportunity to connect with fellow global citizens from diverse backgrounds. These interactions have deepened my understanding of people and business, two relevant aspects of my academic studies.”

Matthew, a Global Business and Digital Arts student, commented about his international exchange: “The past few months have been filled with unforgettable memories, and great learning experiences that will help carry me into the future.”

The Eric Breugst International Exchange Award aligns with the Faculty of Arts priority to foster student agency by offering more opportunities for students to learn and develop their own sense of agency in the world.

When he retired as Manager of Academic Advising in 2020, Breugst had made outstanding contributions during his 25-year career in Arts, which were recognized with a 2018 Faculty of Arts award for Excellence in Service. Tragically, Breugst passed away suddenly in August 2024.

“The loss of Eric is truly heartbreaking,” said Richard Eibach, Associate Dean, Undergraduate Students. “But his legacy will endure through the innumerable students, colleagues, and friends whose lives he touched.”
