Talk Title and Abstract:

Particle Acceleration on Cosmological Scales

I will give a tour of the radio sky focussing on extended radio sources in the extragalactic sky. The physics of these sources is interesting and involves the physics of particle acceleration, turbulence and the generation of magnetic fields.  In recent years we have learned a lot about the nature of magnetic fields on cosmological scales, the acceleration of electrons by shock waves and turbulence, as well as the nature of feedback from supermassive black holes.  New results on the radio emission from cosmic filaments and galaxy clusters are examples of the rapid progress in this field. This progress is powered by new observational facilities such as the recently launched X-ray observatory SRG/eROSITA as well as the radio telescopes LOFAR, ASKAP and MeerKAT.
