Computing Resources
- Your mentor may have a laptop or monitor you can use, but most incoming postdocs use some of their research expense money to purchase a new laptop and monitor(s). See Expenses for details of how to purchase.
- The WCA has an account with the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, which we use for running code. Please speak with your mentor or Will about access.
- Wireless is accessed through UniversityofWaterloo network (log in with your WatIam credentials) or Eduroam.
- If you want to use a wired connection, it is advised to register your IP address with the port number. Contact the Science Computing helpdesk.
- Contact the Science Computing helpdesk for assistance with email, wireless or login problems.
Software
Your UWaterloo account provides access to the following software packages:
- Microsoft 365: Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Excel, Teams, Forms etc. You can use the online interface or download the apps to up to five machines. If you have any problems with the Microsoft package please visit the UWaterloo Microsoft page.
- OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams: Part of the Microsoft 365 package. It is worth noting the available: storage: 100 GB on OneDrive and 1TB each on SharePoint and Teams. Many phone calls and virtual meetings within the university are held on Teams.
- Zoom. UWaterloo has a Zoom license for employees, faculty, and graduate students to use. Please do not purchase an additional Zoom account. To create an account, please go to http://uwaterloo.zoom.us, click “Sign In” and log in with your username@uwaterloo.ca credentials. If you have any questions about the Zoom license and account available for employees, please submit a ticket to rt-ist-itms-collab@rt.uwaterloo.ca to receive support from IST.
- Overleaf: UWaterloo has a site agreement with Overleaf to provide an upgrade to Overleaf Professional, free of charge, for all faculty, staff and graduate students for online LaTeX editing.
