Understanding the New Strategy for Issues and Epics in Jira Cloud

Atlassian recently introduced a significant update to how issues and Epics are managed in Jira Cloud. This update consolidates the Epic link and Parent link fields into a single Parent field, enhancing the relationship between Epics and their issues. This new strategy not only simplifies issue management but also offers improved ways to search and manage associations within Jira projects.

Key Features of the New Parent Field

1. Enhanced Association Management:

  • The new Parent field allows users to add or change a parent Epic association directly from an issue’s breadcrumbs. Simply hover over the breadcrumb area and click the pencil icon to make changes.

2. Sub-task Support:

  • Unlike the original Epic link field, which is still used in Server and Data Center and does not support sub-tasks, the new Parent field does. This means you can now easily associate sub-tasks with other hierarchy levels by adding the Parent field to your sub-task screens.

3. Versatile Epic Usage:

  • Epics can now better organize work for a single initiative or manage tasks across multiple teams, sprints, and releases, making them more versatile and integral to project management.

How to Use the New Parent Field

To utilize the new Parent field effectively:

  1. Adding or Changing an Epic Association:

    • Navigate to the issue's breadcrumbs section.
    • Hover over the breadcrumb area.
    • Click the pencil icon to add or change the parent Epic association.
  2. Associating Sub-tasks with Parent Issues:

    • Add the Parent field to your sub-task screens.
    • Use this field to link sub-tasks with their respective parent issues, ensuring better organization and tracking.
