Public Forms Are Coming to Jira

Atlassian has announced that public forms are coming soon to Jira Cloud. This has been one of the most requested features, and it will make it much easier for teams to collect information from people outside their Jira projects or even outside their company.

What Are Public Forms?

Until now, Jira forms could only be shared with people who had access to your Jira site. With this update, teams can create public forms that anyone can fill out – including vendors, customers, and external partners who don’t have a Jira license.

This makes it possible for teams to:

  • Collect requests from other departments that don’t use Jira.

  • Gather feedback directly from external stakeholders.

  • Allow customers or partners to submit information without needing a Jira account.

Key Things to Know

  • Who can create forms? Project admins in both business and software projects (team-managed and company-managed) can create and manage forms.

  • Form access options:

    • Limited – Only those who can already create issues in the project.

    • Open – Anyone who can log into the Jira site.

    • Public – Anyone with the form link, even without a Jira license.

  • Security measures:

    • Public forms require submitters to provide their email address.

    • Submissions are protected by Google reCAPTCHA to prevent spam.

    • Sensitive fields (like assignee, sprint, labels, etc.) and file attachments are not available in public forms.

  • Form submissions: When a public form is submitted, Jira creates a new work item (issue). The submitter’s email address will be added as a comment for reference, and labels will automatically mark the issue as being created from a form.

Managing Public Forms

  • Project admins can deactivate or reactivate forms at any time using the “more” (…) menu in the form builder.

Why This Matters

Public forms are a simple but powerful way for teams to expand how they collect work. Instead of requiring everyone to have Jira access, teams can now open up structured, easy-to-use forms for anyone.

Note: Atlassian has confirmed that this feature is separate from Jira Service Management forms – public forms apply only to Jira Software and Jira Work Management projects.
