Joining the Lab

Joining the Lab

Thank you for your interest in the Autonomous Systems Lab. We are continually looking for talented and motivated people to join the group, and we welcome applications from prospective students with a strong background in areas such as robot motion planning, machine learning, optimization, algorithms, control, or multi-agent coordination.

Before applying, you may find it helpful to look at our recent work on my publications page and Google Scholar, to get a sense of the problems the group is currently working on.

Graduate students (MASc and PhD)

I am currently accepting applications for MASc and PhD students. Graduate students are admitted through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), primarily for a September start. PhD and domestic MASc positions are fully funded; partial funding is typically available for international MASc students.

To be considered, please:

  1. Submit a full application to the ECE graduate program. Admission requirements and deadlines are listed on the department pages for the PhD and the MASc.
  2. List me (Stephen L. Smith) as a potential supervisor in your application, and indicate in your statement which of the lab's research areas interest you most.

Applications are first reviewed by the department's admissions committee, so a complete and competitive ECE application is the most important step. After the application deadline, shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview with me, at which time the available positions, projects, and funding are discussed in detail. Because of the volume of email I receive, I am not able to respond to every inquiry individually or to assess your chances of admission in advance. The best way to be considered is to apply through the department and name me as a potential supervisor.

Postdoctoral scholars and research engineers

Prospective postdoctoral scholars and research engineers/associates are welcome to email me directly at any time. Please include a short description of your research interests, a CV, and how your background relates to the lab's work.

Current students at Waterloo

If you are already a student at the University of Waterloo and are interested in undergraduate research, an MASc, or a project with the lab, please get in touch by email with a brief note about your interests and background.
