About the survey

As part of an ongoing assessment of the University’s central web content management system, and to support early planning and development of WCMS 3, IST’s Web Development team conducted a WCMS user experience survey. The results of this survey will help inform prioritization of future website development as we begin to shift our focus toward building the next WCMS.

The survey was available to the University campus community for a period of three weeks and received submissions from 110 unique participants who were asked to comment on: which elements of the current CMS they liked; which elements they disliked; the elements or functionality they would like to see that doesn't currently exist; and to provide any additional feedback.

Things you like

Many positive comments were received regarding the availability of an intuitive editing toolbar that doesn't require HTML coding knowledge; the professional and consistent overall look and feel across the websites; and the use of a default responsive theme template.

The results also helped to identify elements that could be enhanced, including: offering a wider range of customizable content options; integrating site functionality between themes; and a template that was more visually appealing.

Additionally, there was a focus on improving the:

  • management and process for image uploads
  • orientation of the main navigation and some of its default settings
  • site search functionality and its appearance
  • management of site roles and permissions
  • current upload restrictions, formatting of submissions and management of results within web forms

Suggestions on how to improve existing content types and functionality were offered, along with requests for features, functionality and site management.

What's next

As we build the next WCMS - see the timeline here - we will work to include feasible changes to how things work. We're happy to say that many of the suggestions line up with changes we have already planned. Some of the recommendations for "net new" functionality will be held as feature requests for consideration at the conclusion of the project, and some of the suggestions that were beyond the scope - content changes, search functionality, etc. - will be passed on to the appropriate teams.

Keep an eye on this site for blog posts showing progress and early looks at changes, follow-up surveys, and any additional information.
