A MESSAGE FROM THE PROGRAM DIRECTOR AND CHAIR
Maud Gorbet Professor and Director

Maud Gorbet
Professor and Director

Welcome to the 2023 Capstone Design Project Symposium! Please join me in congratulating our graduating Biomedical Engineering students and the faculty, staff, and mentors on reaching this milestone.

We are incredibly proud to graduate a fifth cohort of students from the Biomedical Engineering undergraduate program. The projects showcase learning from nearly five years of academic experience, co-operative education work terms, and personal endeavours dedicated to developing innovative solutions to address important healthcare challenges. Each year, we continue to be impressed by the problem spaces students choose to tackle, from medical devices to mental health t0 injury prevention. While the projects demonstrate ingenuity in working with technology, hardware, and software, most importantly they keep the individuals, patients, caregivers, and clinicians facing the challenge at the centre of the design process. The projects offer a glimpse of what our students can achieve and how they can positively impact society as they move forward in their careers.

As our students embark on their next chapter, we look forward to seeing the great things they will accomplish in the field of Biomedical Engineering and beyond. We are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate this achievement and we wish our graduating class every success.

On behalf of the graduating Biomedical Engineering students and our BME faculty and staff team, I am delighted to welcome you to the 2023 Capstone Design Symposium.

I wish my sincerest congratulations to all the Capstone Design student teams. Reaching this significant milestone required perseverance through nearly five challenging years of work and study, and we are tremendously proud of all the teams have accomplished.

The Capstone Design Symposium serves as the culmination of the program within which we deliberately and explicitly embed design experiences. At the core of our curriculum, we are equipping students with the skills to design solutions to improve human health and the wellbeing of our communities. The formal approaches for iterative design, prototyping, and engineering analysis allow our BME graduates to excel in and contribute to the timely challenges facing our world.

We wish our graduates every success in their lifelong learning journey. As students look back on their BME experiences, the ups and the downs, I invite them to remain a part of our BME community, keep in touch, and be part of designing the future program for the students that will follow.
