CONNECTED OPTICS

We believe smart eyeglass is going to become the next frontier of computing (think Google Glass and Microsoft HoloLens). At Connected Optics, we are building a cheap and easy to assemble optical head-mounted display device that uses widely available components. Even better, we are open sourcing our design so that you can build your own customized glasses before it goes mainstream and while it is still cool.

TEAM PIVOT

This project is a 3DOF CNC milling machine, with 2 linear degrees of motion, and a rotational degree. Our final product will mill user defined shapes that traditional machining methods struggle to achieve. Team pivot hopes you enjoy the symposium as much as you enjoy their unique spin on a CNC milling machine.

Circadian Energy develops a smart-grid system to provide robust and affordable electricity for remote and underserviced regions of the world. At the heart of our solution is a home power management hub able to relay energy between generation, storage, and usage appliances. A wired network of these hubs dynamically predicts and adapts to usage patterns, providing the most efficient use of resources possible. Our technology is a deployable and scalable solution, ready to integrate the energy needs of the future.

PROJECT ROCK ‘EM SOCK ‘EM

Project Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em is about the creation of the future in boxing training – robotic practice partners.  Currently, trainee boxers are expected to make a large jump from hitting bags or pads to actually sparring in a ring.  This can be very intimidating.  Project Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em aims to ease this transition with the introduction of a robotic training.  The robot will use robotic arm control and computer vision along with strike feedback to provide the most responsive training experience to date.

BLOCK LOCK

The Block Lock is a revolutionary new locking system proposed for the cycling industry, with the intention of vastly improving the lives of commuters. Accuripe is a consumer kitchen appliance that aims to change the way you interact with your fruit. By passively measuring the ripeness of fruit placed in it, you can be alerted when your fruit is ready to eat, or about to go bad. It also uses advanced machine learning algorithms to predict the approximate expiry date so you always know how much time you have to eat your fruit, helping prevent food waste in your home.

SCANCART

The average shopper spends 41 minutes in a grocery store per trip. A lot of this time is spent waiting in long checkout lines or figuring out why the self-checkout machine thinks you haven’t placed your item in the bagging area. The current grocery shopping experience is cumbersome and time-consuming. ScanCart is a convenient solution that brings the entire checkout process to your cart and in the palm of your hand, so you can scan, weigh, pay and be on your way.

KEEPER TEACHER

Training soccer goalkeepers requires consistent ball delivery for use in repetitive drills to develop technique. At the amateur and youth level, players are not able to shoot accurately and thus training is expensive and is usually done by specialized instructors. The Keeper Teacher is a device that aims to deliver balls consistently and autonomously so that goalies can train on their own. We hope that the Keeper Teacher will make goalkeeper training more widely accessible to all demographics and skill levels.

Currently painting walls is a manual, time-consuming, costly, and hazardous task. At MIST (Mobile Intelligent Spraying Technologies), we envision a world where painting walls is efficient, cost-effective, and safe. We plan to achieve this vision by designing an autonomous solution to optimize wall-painting, through the minimization of human interaction.

Project Beacon aims to expand the scope of commercial robots by allowing them to traverse different floors using a drop-in solution that requires no modification to existing infrastructure. This led to the creation of Beacon, an autonomous room service robot for use in the hotel industry. Beacon is equipped with an image processing system, an indoor navigation system and a robotic arm. This allows the robot to navigate a hotel, use the hotel’s elevator and then locate the correct guest’s room.

A-ID aims to solve the problem of counterfeit merchandise and apparel. A small low-cost NFC chip is attached to the merchandise and scanned by the consumer using their smartphone. Using a security algorithm, the app provides immediate feedback to the consumer of whether the product is counterfeit or authentic. The NFC chip can store product information, such as serial number and washing instructions, and provide an avenue for consumer analysis.

WATVISION

WatVision’s mission is to make touch screens accessible to blind and visually impaired individuals. The way humans interact with technology has undergone a rapid shift toward unmanned touch screens. These touch screens often do not have accessibility modes including screen narration or a headphone jack for auditory input. Since companies are not including these accessibility features, WATVision has created a system for a blind individual to navigate a touch screen using only their smartphone with the WATVision App and a wearable device.

Enhancing your morning preparation by combining important daily information such as traffic, news, social media feeds and other apps onto your mirror, Magic Mirror aims to reduce wasted time. Whether it’s catching up with what’s important to you, or watching a video while getting ready, Magic Mirror keeps your hands free and your phone clean from products involved in everyday preparation.

SCRIBBLES AND DOODLES

Students need an ecofriendly, affordable solution to take and share notes in class. Scribbles and Doodles is a two in one platform to enhance the electronic note taking and drawing experience. Scribbles is a custom built stylus which operates on all tablets and features pressure and tilt sensing functionality. Doodles is the companion application which works with the stylus to provide a seamless user experience.

MotoHUD is a heads-up display unit for motorcycle helmets designed to be keep a rider's attention on the road. The HUD provides navigation instructions by pairing it with a smartphone app, and dashboard information by plugging a dongle into the vehicle's diagnostic unit.

Comfort at home starts with temperature. Traditionally, a single thermostat controls the temperature inside a home leading to hot and cold zones. reVENT solves this problem with a smart vent system that controls the temperatures of individual rooms. Users install actuated, internet connected vents and temperature sensors in each room with a smart thermostat, and use a smartphone app to set their temperature preference. The system then applies heating/cooling as needed, thereby ensuring that every person in the home is comfortable.

Nomad is a smart new take on the conventional lunchbox. Mindfully engineered, and aesthetically made to let you eat anytime, anywhere. Nomad’s thermal (self-heating) capability allow users to heat up their food on at a push of a button.

Gone are the days of clunky looking lunch boxes and the inevitable search for a microwave. With Nomad, you could be at the office, the park, the bus, the mall or on top of a mountain and will be able to enjoy your warm home prepared meal.

EcoBin is the next-generation composter for today’s household. Traditional composting has been difficult for many households to adopt – it takes several weeks to finish, generates odor and bacteria, and can result in imbalanced soil that can impair plant growth. By optimizing compost conditions and adding automation, EcoBin speeds up this process to a matter of days. With EcoBin, homeowners will be able to convert their food waste into high-quality compost faster and more conveniently than ever before.

TULIP

Tulip is an internal positioning system designed to bring the simple and intuitive GPS experience to the indoor space. Tulip aims to provide users with accurately updated position within 10 seconds. The system combines breakthrough RF technology and positioning algorithms to minimize error in position. Quick to implement and easily set-up by anyone; Tulip is one of the most affordable internal positioning systems that exists. Users simply need to carry a small tag to begin tracking.

GUITARS AND GADGETS

There exist two main options for learning how to play the guitar: being trained by a third party or teaching oneself. One is richly dynamic but inflexible while the other is quite the opposite. Guitars and Gadgets is creating an add-on device to an existing guitar that will combine the strengths of both! It aids beginners in learning the basics of playing guitar through light-up indicators and real time feedback.

NOVUS TECHNOLOGIES

Over the years, we have spent time perfecting the transportation of products from place to place, but have neglected the movement of goods within the warehouse itself. Every year, thousands of warehouse workers are injured by lugging around thousands of pounds within a warehouse.

To solve this tedious process, Novus Technologies aims to develop a fully automated warehouse robot that can transport a standard-sized pallet-based payload in an indoor environment while maintaining efficiency and reducing injuries.

PROJECT HANK

GrowXY is a company developing automated technologies to improve the economics of indoor farming. Their current project, dubbed Project-Hank, has two main components. The first component involves crop mobility; essentially removing the need for people to manually move crops to different points of operation. The second component involves the use of computer vision to monitor plants and track their health as they grow. Indoor farmers can leverage this quantitative data, to iteratively adjust their environment parameters so as to maximize yield.

DEEP END ROBOTICS

Coral reef research currently consumes a significant amount of resources and manpower. To alleviate the costs of monitoring coral reef activity, a remote autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) has been designed and built. The AUV will allow researchers to remotely obtain high-quality video and other data, with the ability to review video for various metrics and construct 3D models of the coral reef.

FoosFighter is a training tool for both professional and aspiring competitive foosball players. FoosFighter seeks to create an automated foosball opponent using machine learning for foosball players to practice technical skills. Another issue present in competitive foosball is that several table models are commonly used for tournaments. North American tournaments run primarily on Tornado T-3000 tables whereas tournaments in France use Bonzini B90 tables. FoosFighter allows professional players to practice against an opponent on an unfamiliar table.

FLŌT

Smart home technology has come a long way with many tech giants introducing voice assistant products that are stationary, glorified smart speakers.  However, we have yet to create products that elicit emotional investment and fluid personal interactions. One of the key missing elements is physical presence.  We developed a safe, noninvasive floating blimp robot that is capable of navigating and reacting to its complex environment. Our robot fibi is ready to navigate and interact with humans around the homes providing assistance and personal robot experience.

VR-FITTING

Shopping online in the comfort of one’s home versus bustling shopping malls. The choice is obvious, but it’s not that simple. Meeting the rise of online shopping are issues that lean consumers away from it. One such issue is the lack of universal clothing metrics and variable body sizes, which do not guarantee 100% fit. VR-Fitting has proposed an at-home solution that allows one to create a virtual model of themselves to try on clothes prior to purchase, encompassing motion, stretch, and style.

Practicing Volleyball can become immensely frustrating with the amount of time and effort wasted in collecting balls. This is why we introduced Collecta. Collecta is an autonomous ball collection robot. Collecta uses a state of the art vision system and sleek ball collection mechanism to maneuver around any gymnasium, gather and return balls to players, allowing players to focus their time on what’s important, practice.

We aim to build a solution that autonomously builds an accurate and up to date 3D model of a given construction site. This will be done using a drone. The site model will contain a 3D spatial occupancy grid as well as labelled roads and points of interest. This information will be provided to other systems on the site wirelessly, enabling autonomous solutions to navigate the site and work together.
