MOMENT

Moment is an automated solution for video calling aiming to introduce machine learning and actuation to identify and track points of interests. Simple webcam devices lack the ability to track points of interest outside of their field-of-view nor can they determine what is important in a scene. Computer vision and deep learning are well-suited to tackle this issue and bring another dimension to the camera. The Moment device can track users and automatically present a view of the most engaging point of interest in a 360-degree environment.

MÔBI

The môbi is an assistive device designed to help lift individuals with mobility issues from sitting to standing. A major benefit of the apparatus is that it maintains the independence of the user by allowing for safe operation without the aid of another person.

Picking a new outfit every day and finding those items in our messy closets can cost significant time and mental resources. Amari’s mission is to simplify the process of getting dressed by aiding users in outfit selection through an intelligent, automated and space efficient system. Armari consists of an electro-mechanical system for the storage of the clothing items and a mobile application that bridges the gap between the physical system and the user in order to provide effective outfit selection and location.

GUIDANCE FOR ATHLETICS USING AN INERTIAL SYSTEM (GAINS)

As the fitness industry continues to grow, there is an increasing concern for risk of injury. An estimated 69% of weightlifting injuries are related to strain of tendinitis, which is almost always caused by poor exercise form. Most solutions on the market include high cost personal trainers, or low effectiveness mobile apps. The GAINS system will track a user’s body kinematics and use haptic feedback to guide them towards the perfect form. Novice weightlifters will be able to refine their form to maximize exercise effectiveness.

WATOPTICS: NAVSPEX

WatOptics aims to make navigation inside building infrastructures accessible and convenient for visually impaired individuals. Our solution, a pair of smart glasses, computes the best path from the user’s current location to the desired destination while incorporating environmental factors like obstacles. It also uses breakthrough image recognition algorithms to process the surroundings. Lightweight and portable, it is an affordable and easy-to-use system that everyone can wear, just like any other everyday device.

SIGNN

Over 350,000 culturally Deaf Canadians experience difficulties in everyday interactions such as going to the bank or ordering at restaurants. Our team aims to bridge this communication gap with SIGNN (Sign-language Interpreting Glove using Neural Networks). SIGNN is a portable, glove-based solution which leverages deep learning to process hand motions, interpret ASL phrases, and provide an auditory English translation in real time.

ATLAS MEDICAL

A pressure injury is an illness of the skin and underlying tissue due to restricted blood flow as a result of immobility. Every year in the United States, pressure injuries kill 60,000 people and cost the healthcare system over 11 billion dollars. Atlas Medical aims to postpone the onset and mitigate the existence of pressure injuries in hospitalized, bedridden patients by automating patient adjustment. Our technology consists of a full-scale pressure sensing array, an intelligent pneumatics system, and novel data processing algorithms.

NORDIC

Consumers fork over an impressive amount money every day on specialty beverages whose taste starts to falter after a couple minutes of being exposed to ambient room temperature. Nordic uses thermoelectric plates powered by a beefy 12 Amp-hour rechargeable battery pack to actively heat and cool beverages to the optimal temperature. We aim to make a pristine drinking experience possible for on-the-go beverage consumers.

STITCH STUDIO

Stitch Studio aims to lower the barrier of entry to embroidery by bringing automatic embroidery features to low-cost, mechanical sewing machines. With a simple sewing machine attachment, hobbyists can transform digital designs into embroidery patterns and automatically stitch the design onto fabric.

MORE ACCESSIBLE SURGICAL ARM (MASA)

This small robot arm allows surgeons to access more of the human body. We improve upon traditional instruments by increasing the range of motion on robot arm end-effectors, using novel systems involving gravity-neutrality and grounded motors. Surgeons working with MASA can then circumvent in-body obstacles and avoid tool interference often present in single-incision surgery. Through this, MASA hopes to be the next step to improving accessibility in robotic surgery.

Sonicam is the shotgun microphone of the future. Unlike a traditional shotgun microphone with a single fixed beam of focus, Sonicam is a smart acoustic capture device that uses state-of-the-art computer vision and computational audio research in order to give video creators greater control over the audio they record. Sonicam allows users to dynamically change the acoustic focus and foreground/background mixture in the scene, giving video creators a new paradigm of mixing audio, one of the most important components of video.

BRELLI

Businesses such as restaurants and theme parks rely on patio umbrellas to keep their customers happy, but they are dangerous in inclement weather, expensive to replace, and bad at providing sufficient shade throughout the day. Brelli is a solar-powered patio umbrella that uses sensor fusion and digital control systems to auto-close in harsh winds and provide the optimal amount of shade all day to happy customers underneath.

CapsuleMate is a pill dispenser designed to notify a user and dispense the appropriate combination of medications at the correct time. It aims to reduce non-adherence by automating the process of remembering which medications to take and at what intervals. CapsuleMate is sized to use in a home, stores up to 4 different kinds of capsules, and has a user-friendly design making it simple for the elderly population to use.

MATI

Approximately 1 in 25 people admit to have fallen asleep while driving in the last 30 days. With low levels of automation becoming more common in vehicles, driver inattention is more prevalent decreasing safety for all. Mati uses image processing and machine learning algorithms to identify when a driver is in a fatigue state to recommend when they should take breaks. In addition, Mati creates a user profile to provide a personalized experience and achieve greater accuracy.

PETAL HOME ENERGY MONITORING

The Petal Home Energy Monitoring system provides a seamless and robust solution for homeowners to understand their energy usage behaviours. The solution integrates with the home’s circuit breaker to collect electrical data and disaggregate appliances in the household. This data is processed and sent to a companion app on the homeowner’s personal device to inform them of their energy consumption patterns, helping the homeowner in identifying and forming effective energy usage habits to save on their energy bill and reduce their ecological footprint.

SPOTERIA

Spoteria offers an innovative solution for novice workout enthusiasts, specifically targeted towards weight lifting exercises for the shoulders. As a result, Spoteria aims to improve the workout experience while minimizing the risk of injury. This project uses computer vision and machine learning to monitor exercise form by examining joint angles. Using a Kinect sensor and a smart display, the user is presented with real time visual feedback on the display to help them correct their workout form.

SMOOTHIO

Smoothio is a fully automated smoothie preparation robot. The system offers a broad range of fresh ingredients and permits users to customize their order. Smoothies are produced with zero human interaction with all dispensing, blending, cleaning, and serving entirely automated.  Smoothio is faster and more accurate than any Booster Juice employee you’ve ever met.  Now who wants a smoothie?

VISIONVEST

Currently, visually impaired people understand and navigate their surroundings through the use of walking sticks (requiring active probing) and guide dogs (limiting a user to indirect information). VisionVest aims to create a passive and direct way for visually impaired people to avoid immediate obstacles. By leveraging sensory substitution, a tactile vest with vibration motors equipped with a depth camera is used to give the user feedback on their surrounding to assist them with obstacle avoidance.

SHOPTRAC

Brick-and-mortar stores struggle with collecting data on customer traffic, as they lack the tools and resources readily available to their e-commerce counterparts. ShopTrac is an all-in-one computer vision solution that allows retailers to count visitors and classify individuals based on age and sex. It uses a discreet door-mounted camera system for non-invasive tracking and machine-learning algorithms to profile store customers. With an easy-to-use web dashboard, retailers can have store performance and customer data right at their fingertips.

INTELLISHIFTER

We are IntelliShifter, and with a lot more focus being placed on a greener future, we hope to revamp bicycles! Our goal is to prove the feasibility of continuously variable transmission (CVT) on bicycles. CVT allows bikers to choose from a continuous range of gear ratios. Taking advantage of this feature, we also wish to add automatic transmission to help bikers maintain their desired cadence. In our proof of concept, we hope to showcase the potential for a more fun and enjoyable biking experience!

DYNAMIC CUTTING SYSTEM

We are seeking to improve the process of processing vegetables. Our target customers are small restaurants as they prepare vegetables in bulk. From conducting surveys, we found that most small restaurant businesses spend up to $5000-$7000 in cost and 250-500 hours yearly on cutting vegetables. Although some solutions exist for semi-automated cutting, we are offering a unique solution by including vegetable sorting as well, where different types of vegetables can be fed in and the cut slices and sorted into appropriate bins.

PALO

Palo aims to enhance the radios that emergency medical responder carry as part of their standard uniform. These radios have designated panic buttons, pressed in case of emergencies, informing dispatch that the responder is in distress. Unfortunately, the button only informs dispatch that there is an emergency, and the current location of the paramedic’s ambulance, with no data about the actual paramedic. Palo relays real-time location data to dispatch, along with user identifications, allowing for safer deployments and better emergency response.

STITCH

The process of going to a medical facility and getting stitches can be time consuming and inefficient. This project seeks to apply mechatronic solutions to alleviate existing problems such as long wait times for medical attention, business downtime due to injuries, and expensive medical bills. The mechanism that we have designed is an autonomous suturing device capable of sealing lacerations without human involvement. A robotic arm, a gantry workspace, and computer vision algorithms work in tandem to detect and close wounds using a suturing needle.

GLIDERS FOR HUMANITY

Massive humanitarian crises are occurring around the world such as the Siege of Aleppo and the Yemen Civil War, endangering innocent residents with starvation and lack of medical supplies. Aid agencies require low-cost, disposable methods of delivering humanitarian aid to active combat zones like these. Our team has developed an autonomous glider which can be dropped en masse from a cargo plane and land at various pre-assigned destinations carrying direly needed supplies without endangering human lives in the process.

GRANOLA PODS

GranolaPods is an automated granola bar making machine that creates a custom snack based on your personalized macronutrient requirements. Software takes your health requirements into account and select ingredients to suit your needs. The end product is a GranolaPod (granola snack with a personality!) served in a convenient and resealable package, perfect for health conscious, on-the-go individuals.

As the world’s average age increases, the need for physiotherapy becomes more profound. Unsupervised exercise is a common prescription, but people just aren’t able to consistently and correctly perform exercises independently. An improved experience could impact the health and wellness of many people. Articul8 aims to provide this experience, bringing new technologies into physiotherapy to enhance patient outcomes. Articul8 includes four engineering students with varying technical expertise, whose passion and skills will allow them to fuse emerging technologies and create a better physiotherapy experience.

SCALAR

Scalar is a simple, automated hands-free solution for point-to-point distance measurement. Using an innovative standalone pod design, scalar accurately measures linear distances with infrared technology between two said pods. Each pod is battery powered and Bluetooth enabled for wireless connectivity and is meant to be used with a fleet of other pods to increase measuring capability.

BEACH CLEANING

Beaches around the world are littered with plastic and other garbage. This waste negatively affects the environment in many ways from affecting marine ecosystems to human health. The current tools used to clean up this garbage are manual, expensive and disruptive. Beach Cleaning Automated is developing an autonomous robot that is capable of identifying garbage on beaches and collecting it discreetly at a much lower cost.

REAR-END COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROJECT (RECAP)

The Rear-End Collision Avoidance Project (RECAP) is a driver-aid that uses a network established between nearby vehicles to share and make use of other vehicles’ status information to improve drivers’ situational awareness. Determining how quickly a vehicle ahead is decelerating can be challenging, making it difficult for drivers to know how hard to brake. RECAP provides drivers with clear information, allowing them to make better, more informed driving decisions to avoid dangerous situations. With RECAP, drivers are more aware, making roads safer.

RAPID RESCUE

Rapid Rescue is an autonomous safety system designed to monitor high-risks areas around unpatrolled beaches where lifeguarding services are unavailable or impractical. Through early detection and immediate support, we aim to reduce the annual number of drowning incidents due to swimmers encountering common dangers in the sea. (i.e. rip currents, shoals, etc.)

Rapid Rescue features an UAV equipped with a deployable flotation device and a camera. The camera feeds a machine vision algorithm running on a remote device which recognizes and locates swimmers.

CARDOBOT

Over 20 million people collect trading cards worldwide, and many lack a good way to effectively sort and keep track of their cards. The average player spends up to 20 hours a month sorting their collection. cardWizard is an automated system that uses optical character recognition and image processing to differentiate between cards and determine their features or value. Vacuum suction gently handles cards to prevent damage, and automatically sorts them into up to 6 categories which are decided upon by the user.

AUTOMATED APPLE PICKER/APPLED SCIENCE

Our automated apple picker, EVE, will address the growing labour shortage in the farming industry by providing a fully automated apple picking solution. EVE uses a combination of cameras to detect an apple’s position before using its SCARA arm to reach for the apple, and its end effector to twist it off the tree. An initial prototype will be shown at the symposium, showcasing the capabilities of our robot, including a full horizontal range of motion and a scaled down vertical range of motion.

STRATOSNAP

We believe in a future of highly accessible aerial photography and a more connected mobile world. To this end, we have developed a device that uses the latest advances in portable drone and gimbal technology to bring your phone to the sky. Our design also makes full use of the state-of-the-art cameras and image processing capabilities of modern smartphones to bring your Instagram feed to the next level.

ART CONSERVATION MEETS ENGINEERING

Art conservators assess and restore defects on hundreds of paintings every year at museums and art galleries. Currently, manual defect analysis is conducted when artworks travel between galleries for exhibitions, which can take from 30min to 4h for a single piece. There is a need for a faster, easy to use and accurate mechanism for detection of cracks in paintings, which our solution aims to fulfill.

TUNEITIN

This project is to create an automatic guitar tuner that will be able to automatically tune the guitar strings on the input of a single strum. It will simultaneously detect all the string frequencies and automatically adjusts them to the right tune. The device will be portable and will not need any invasive instrument modifications. It will also be robust against noise, allowing it to operate well in loud environments.

SCALED CITY FOR SMART VEHICLES (DJABA)

Researchers need an effective method to test autonomous driving for connected urban environments. Existing solutions in the market require autonomous driving algorithms to be tested on computer simulations or vehicles equipped with expensive state of the art sensors. DJABA aims to provide students and researchers with a testbench to test autonomous driving algorithms by scaling the problem down, with our scaled smart city and scaled autonomy-capable vehicles. We provide a software platform allowing users to interface with sensor data and upload algorithms to accelerate the research process.

INSPEKSI

This is a low-cost intelligent manufacturing visual inspections tool. The design features a metal enclosure with a robot arm that hangs at the top of the enclosure. A camera is attached at the end effector of the robot arm, allowing the robot to capture images of the inspected parts from different positions without touching the parts. The images are then transferred to a server computer where the data will be stored and processed with the vision algorithm.

PROJECT MERLIN

Tabletop Role Playing Games like Dungeons & Dragons have become more popular than ever, but ever since the first character sheet was filled out one fact remains true: Games like this take a lot of effort to play. With Project Merlin we are aiming to maximize fun by removing time-consuming tasks like drawing maps and moving characters from the equation, so that Game Masters and Players can focus on storytelling and role-playing. Exploring dungeons has never been easier than with Project Merlin!

DRUGLESS DRIVING

Drugless Driving is a universal interface focused on preventing impaired driving by inhibiting the operation of a vehicle while intoxicated. Drugless Driving conducts a breath test compatible with multiple drug detection devices to measure the level of impairment in an individual, along with facial recognition to prevent cheating. We have a vision where impaired drivers will never be behind the wheel.

POSCHAIR

Sitting with poor posture for long periods of time can lead to consequences like short term muscle strain and long term chronic pain. This will impact the lives and health of many, especially as more and more people lead a sedentary lifestyle. PosChair is a posture correction chair that uses sensors to monitor the user’s posture, and provides real-time feedback to let them know when they are sitting improperly and how to fix it. 

EXODEETO

Dexterous skills require a significant time commitment to acquire. The goal of this device is to accelerate the independent learning of these skills. This is done through the coercion of the fingers into specific positions. The idea is that this device would demonstrate to users the correct positions required to perform a skill; this should allow them to learn more rapidly and precisely. A library of learnable hand positions can be created for a variety of uses, from fine motor skills to rehabilitation exercises.

GROUP 46

Two identical robotic arms will be made where one is the master and the other is the slave. Each arm has four rigid links that are connected in a parallelogram shape. Two motors will actuate two of the links, and the other two links will move passively. This configuration provides stability as both motors will be connected to the arm at the same stable base. The human operator can then move the master (or even the slave) at the end effector.

The popularity of board games has increased tremendously, as they are meant to connect people back to their simple roots of personal face-to-face entertainment. However with that goal in mind, they often wish to dissociate with any technology at all. Digiboard aims to modernize board games by providing a platform with a touch screen, interactive smart game pieces, and phone integration to enhance the board game experience while maintaining the character of classic board games.
