Adel Sedra Entrepreneurship Award for Capstone Design

Eligibility

Student teams enrolled in Waterloo Engineering’s Fourth-Year Capstone Design Projects. The awards are open to student teams from all engineering departments. 

Value

One award at approximately $3,000 (the value of the Award will be determined by the income generated by the Fund each year). The funds will be divided equally among the winning team members.

Application and selection process

  • Capstone Design teams selected as finalists of the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards for Capstone Design will be entered in the Adel Sedra People’s Choice Entrepreneurship Award competition.
  • Selection is based on public choice: students, faculty, and visitors in attendance at the Norman Esch Entrepreneurship Awards pitch event, culminating each year's Capstone Design Symposia, will have the opportunity to vote.
  • In case of a tie, the Faculty of Engineering will draw a winner.
  • The selection process is subject to change year to year.

About Adel Sedra

Adel Sedra served as dean of Waterloo Engineering from July 1, 2003 to June 30, 2012 and is one of the world’s leading electrical engineers and an engineering educator who specializes in the areas of microelectronics, focusing on the theory and design of circuits for communication and instrumentation systems. He received his BSc from Cairo University in 1964 and his MASc and PhD in electrical engineering from the University of Toronto. He joined the Faculty of the University of Toronto in 1969 and served in a number of capacities including vice president, provost, and chief academic officer.  In honour of Sedra’s contributions to the University of Waterloo, Savvas Chamberlain, the founder of DALSA Corporation, led a campaign to establish the Adel Sedra Entrepreneurship Award for Capstone Design.
