Dr. Krzysztof Czarnecki will overview the current state of autonomous vehicles, exploring active deployments, emerging challenges and research directions. This will include the designs that power existing and next-generation autonomous systems. The presentation will draw on the growing body of experience from real-world deployments, including key challenges such as driving errors, safety assurance hurdles, and high development costs of systems intended for public roads. The talk will also highlight research taking place in the Waterloo Intelligent Systems Engineering (WISE) Lab.
Dr. Czarnecki is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a University Research Chair at the University of Waterloo. He is an Associate Director of the Waterloo Centre for Automotive Research (WatCAR) and leads the Waterloo Intelligent Systems Engineering (WISE) Laboratory, which co-led the development of the first autonomous vehicle tested on public roads in Canada. His research focuses on ensuring the safety of AI systems and driving behavior, and he has made significant contributions to automotive AI and software safety standards.
