The Government of Canada has just announced the newest group of Canada Research Chairs (CRC). Congratulations to all nine professors across the University of Waterloo appointed in 2020. This list of new and renewed Canada Research Chairs includes three IC3 members.
Monica Emelko, Canada Research Chair in Water Science, Technology and Policy
Monica Emelko is a professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a tier one CRC in Water Science, Technology and Policy. Monica is also the Director of the Water Science, Technology & Policy Group and is cross-appointed in Biology, Geography & Environmental Management, Systems Design Engineering, and the School of Planning. Her research interests focus on drinking water supply and treatment, source water protection, microbial risk assessment, public health policy, and stormwater and advanced wastewater treatment.
Michelle Rutty, Canada Research Chair in Tourism, Environment, and Sustainability
Michelle Rutty is an assistant professor in the Faculty of Environment and a tier two CRC in Tourism, Environment, and Sustainability. Michelle's research interests include tourism, environment and sustainability, understanding the decision-making process and behavioural response of tourists to environmental change, assessing climate change risks and opportunities for tourism operators and destinations, and developing solutions to build a more environmentally sustainable tourism sector.
Sarah Burch, Canada Research Chair in Sustainability Governance and Innovation
Sarah Burch is an associate professor in Geography and Environmental Management and a tier two CRC in Sustainability Governance and Innovation. Sarah is an expert in transformative responses to climate change at the community scale, innovative strategies for making progress on sustainability, and the unique contributions that small businesses can make to this solving this complex challenge. She also leads the international partnership-based research project TRANSFORM: Accelerating sustainability entrepreneurship experiments in local spaces, and is the Director of the Sustainability Policy Research on Urban Transformations (SPROUT) Lab.
