Municipal Climate Adaptation Certificate: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The costs of the certificate and courses will vary depending on your role as an Indigenous community member or municipal staff member, the table below provides a short summary:

The rates above do not include applicable taxes. 

The Standard rate applies to anyone not included in the Eligible or Indigenous Community Members categories. 

Eligible for Bursary: Municipal staff; Municipally owned utilities staff; Non-profit organizations staff 

Indigenous Community Members: no-cost invitation includes Indigenous government leaders, community leaders and staff, and leaders and staff at Indigenous organizations. 

The first cycle of courses begins on January 12, 2026 with the Foundations of Climate Risk and Adaptation course. The second cycle of courses begins on June 1, 2026 continued into fall 2026 with the Specialization courses and the Mini-Capstone.

Yes, this certificate would provide excellent foundational knowledge for someone new to climate science and climate change issues and opportunities for adaptation strategies. The courses are designed to support participants with a spectrum of experience in climate change and adaptation.

Yes, you can take more than one of the Specialization courses if you wish. To confirm, you only need to select one for the certificate. Please be aware of the start dates and time commitment for the Specialization courses. You can expect 2-3 hours per week of time to read and interact with the course content, so choose wisely in terms of your available time and interests. You will have to pay an extra fee for each course selected. You can also take the Foundations of Climate Risk and Adaptation course and any of the Specialization courses as one-off learning experiences if you do not wish to take the full certificate.

The current design of the certificate has the Mini-Capstone course dates as May 25, 26, and 27, 2026 for the Cycle One participants and December 7, 8, and 9, 2026 for Cycle Two participants. We will only have a limited number of spaces for the in-person Mini-Capstone.

Yes, there will be a small travel bursary on an as-needed and as-selected basis for participants choosing the in-person Mini-Capstone option. We are striving to include participants from each province and territory if possible. The online Mini-Capstone is more accessible and is open to anybody who has completed the Foundations course and one Specialization.

Yes, participation in this certificate will involve a variety of applied practice opportunities using standard climate action tools that will help staff to create a climate adaptation or climate action plan for their communities. The process of creating a climate plan involves significant consultation and collaboration over time with regional colleagues, elected officials, and community partners, so be aware that the time and staff needed to create a well-designed, strategic climate plan may be more than can be accomplished in this course series. You might consider taking the certificate program with colleagues so that a group of you are able to work together on this (or other climate adaptation actions needed in your municipality).

Yes, it is possible. We recommend taking the courses in order starting with the Foundations course, selecting a Specialization course, and finishing with the Mini-Capstone. If you need to, you can take cycle two courses in the fall of 2026 but you must take the Foundations course and at least one of the Specialization courses prior to taking the Mini-Capstone. 

Once you have applied, been accepted, and registered for the courses you wish to take, you will be sent a link for payment by credit card. If you need to have an invoice that your municipality or organization will pay, please follow the invoicing instructions on the registration form. We will develop an invoice in partnership with you and your Finance colleagues.

Le tarif standard s'applique à toute personne ne faisant pas partie des catégories « Admissibles » ou « Membres des communautés autochtones ».

Admissibles à une bourse : personnel municipal ; personnel des services publics municipaux ; personnel des organisations à but non lucratif.

Membres des communautés autochtones : l'invitation gratuite s'adresse aux dirigeants et au personnel des gouvernements autochtones, aux dirigeants et au personnel des communautés autochtones, ainsi qu'aux dirigeants et au personnel des organisations autochtones. 

Le premier cycle de cours commence le 12 janvier 2026 avec le cours « Fondements des risques et de l'adaptation au changement climatique ». Le deuxième cycle de cours commence le 1er juin 2026 et se poursuit jusqu'à l'automne 2026 avec les cours de spécialisation et le micro-projet.

Oui, ce certificat fournirait d'excellentes connaissances de base à toute personne novice en matière de science climatique et de changement climatique, ainsi que sur les possibilités de stratégies d'adaptation. Les cours sont conçus pour aider les participants ayant des niveaux d'expérience variés en matière de changement climatique et d'adaptation.

Oui, vous pouvez suivre plusieurs cours de spécialisation si vous le souhaitez. Pour obtenir le certificat, il vous suffit d'en sélectionner un seul. Veuillez prendre connaissance des dates de début et du temps à consacrer aux cours de spécialisation. Vous devrez consacrer 2 à 3 heures par semaine à la lecture et à l'interaction avec le contenu du cours. Choisissez donc judicieusement en fonction de votre temps disponible et de vos centres d'intérêt. Vous devrez payer des frais supplémentaires pour chaque cours sélectionné. Vous pouvez également suivre le cours « Fondements des risques et de l'adaptation au changement climatique » et n'importe quel cours de spécialisation en tant qu'expérience d'apprentissage ponctuelle si vous ne souhaitez pas obtenir le certificat complet.

La conception actuelle du certificat indique que les dates du cours Micro-projet sont les 25, 26 et 27 mai 2026 pour les participants du cycle 1 et les 7, 8 et 9 décembre 2026 pour les participants du cycle 2. Nous n'aurons qu'un nombre limité de places pour le Micro-projet en présentiel.

Oui, une petite bourse de voyage sera offerte, selon les besoins et sur sélection, aux participants qui choisissent l'option Micro-projet en présentiel. Nous nous efforçons d'inclure des participants de chaque province et territoire, dans la mesure du possible. Le Micro-projet en ligne est plus accessible et ouvert à toute personne ayant suivi le cours Fondements et une spécialisation.

Oui, c'est possible. Nous vous recommandons de suivre les cours dans l'ordre, en commençant par le cours «Fondements», puis en choisissant un cours de spécialisation et en terminant par le cours « Micro-projet ». Si nécessaire, vous pouvez suivre les cours du deuxième cycle à l'automne 2026, mais vous devez suivre le cours « Fondements » et au moins un des cours de spécialisation avant de suivre le cours «Micro-projet».

Une fois que vous aurez postulé, été accepté et inscrit aux cours que vous souhaitez suivre, vous recevrez un lien pour effectuer le paiement par carte de crédit. Si vous avez besoin d'une facture que votre municipalité ou votre organisation paiera, veuillez suivre les instructions de facturation figurant sur le formulaire d'inscription. Nous établirons une facture en collaboration avec vous et vos collègues du service financier.
