The University of Waterloo’s Climate Institute is offering a new Municipal Climate Adaptation Certificate, designed specifically for municipal staff who are looking to strengthen their climate resilience skills.
This forward-thinking initiative is funded by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) and is offered at an affordable rate of $150 per course for municipal, Indigenous community, and non-profit staff.
Learn from Canada’s Leading Climate Educators
Developed by leading climate adaptation educators at the University of Waterloo, with advice from municipal colleagues and experts from across Canada, this professional development certificate equips participants with practical tools and knowledge to address the growing challenges of climate change within their roles—whether in accounting, planning, health, governance, engineering, or community development. Course materials and assignments emphasize real-world examples and case studies to ensure relevance and practicality in community, regional, and municipal contexts.
All courses will be delivered in an instructor-led, flexible, and affordable online format (in both French and English), allowing participants to earn continuing professional development credentials or complete a full Certificate.
This certificate empowers participants to confidently:
- Connect climate action opportunities to their specific roles in municipalities and Indigenous communities.
- Describe climate science, climate risks, climate impacts, and climate adaptation solutions
- Identify climate adaptation needs specific to vulnerable populations within their community
- Assess and prioritize climate risks and service vulnerabilities according to community needs
- Identify strategies to address anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion through climate action
- Identify nature-based adaptation solutions and co-benefits appropriate to their context
- Develop adaptation strategies that will have a positive and long-term impact on the community without undermining other environmental and social programs
- Develop strategies to meaningfully engage key stakeholders on equity-informed climate action
