11 Waterloo researchers earn Early Researcher Awards

Eleven University of Waterloo researchers have received Early Researcher Awards worth over $2 million.

The announcement is part of a larger investment by the Government of Ontario aimed at supporting research and innovative discoveries across Ontario. Each researcher will receive $140,000 over five years as well as an additional $50,000 from the University. They are:

Applied Health Sciences

  • Sharon Kirkpatrick (School of Public Health and Health Systems): Enhancing our capacity to inform strategies to support healthy eating
  • Laura Middleton (Kinesiology): Creating exercise opportunities for people with/at-risk for dementia

Engineering

  • Wojciech Golab (Electrical and Computer Engineering): Software techniques for emerging memory technologies
  • Ning Jiang (System Design Engineering): Brain-computer interfacing: Where artificial intelligence meets human intelligence
  • Youngki Yoon (Electrical and Computer Engineering): Flexible photo sensors based on 2D nanomaterials for internet of things and wearable electronic applications

Mathematics

  • Jun Liu (Applied Math): Robust synthesis of cyber-physical systems: bridging the gaps between control theory and formal methods
  • Peter Nelson (Combinatorics and Optimization): Emergent structure in matroid theory

Science

  • Rebecca Rooney (Biology): Pesticides and invasive species restoration
  • Heidi Swanson (Biology): Understanding ecology, life history, and mercury levels in fish
  • Wei Tsen (Chemistry): Engineering quantum devices with two-dimensional materials and heterostructures
  • William Wong (Pharmacy): Developing policy methods for viral hepatitis: integrating best evidence of effectiveness, safety, cost, and patient preferences
