CIHR awards $3.4 million to Waterloo researchers

Five University of Waterloo researchers have received CIHR fall 2017 project competition grants worth $3.4 million. They are:

Applied Health Sciences

  • David Hammond (School of Public Health and Health Systems): Marijuana legalization policy: Impact on prevalence and risk behaviours among youth and young adults in Canada ($1,514,700)
  • Shannon Majowicz (School of Public Health and Health Systems): Beyond diarrhea, to disability and death: uncovering the hidden health consequences of foodborne infections ($585,224)

Engineering

  • Tom Willett (Systems Design Engineering): Bone-mimetic nanocomposite biomaterials for critically-sized skeletal defect reconstruction ($665,552)

Science

  • John-Michael Gamble (School of Pharmacy): Comparative Safety of the Sodium Glucose Co-transporter-2 (SGLT-2) Inhibitors in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes ($359,550)
  • Ben Thompson (School of Optometry): An engaging, patch-free treatment for young children with amblyopia ($336,600)
