Waterloo professor wins Nobel Prize in Physics

Donna Strickland, an associate professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, has been named a winner of this year’s Nobel Prize in Physics. Strickland has won this prestigious award for her Nobel-winning research conducted while she was a PhD student under French laser physicist Gérard Mourou in 1989. Strickland and Mourou’s groundbreaking laser physics research has furthered a number of applications in industry and medicine. Strickland shares half the $1.4 million prize with Mourou, and is the first woman since 1963 to win the Nobel physics prize.
