Waterloo researchers and local data mining company develop novel water hydrant sensor system

Monday, October 15, 2018

With support from Southern Ontario Water Consortium, Waterloo researchers and local data mining company Pattern Discovery Technologies have partnered to develop a novel water hydrant monitoring system.

Sriram Narasimhan, professor, civil and environmental engineering, and fellow researchers have developed a hydrant mounted sensor system that senses leaks with acoustic signatures. Hydrant leaks are difficult to find and water is subsequently wasted costing cities millions of dollars. With Narasimhan’s hydrant mounted sensor and Pattern Discovery Technologies data mining expertise, leaks can be detected and even predicted.
