CryptoWorks21 (CW21) provides financial support to its eligible members. These awards have been made possible through generous contributions from the Royal Bank of Canada, the Institute for Quantum Computing, and the Faculty of Engineering, Science and Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. They are enthusiastic about promoting and advancing excellence in cryptography and security.
CryptoWorks21 Conference Award
Awards are available to encourage CW21 members to participate in an academic cryptography related conference or summer school and engage in academic dialogue within their field of study and research.
Prize: each award includes travel expenses for one recipient. This covers round-trip coach airfare (minimum fare), conference registration, and up to four nights at conference-rate hotel accommodations for a three-day conference, or up to five nights for a four-day conference, for a total award of up to CAD $2,500.
Basis for Judging: Submissions will be evaluated based on the nominee’s commitment to the CW21 program.
Eligibility:
- For students: The nominee must be currently enrolled in a full-time Master's/Doctoral program in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CW21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The student's thesis must have focused on cryptography. The conference or workshop must be related to Cryptography.
- For postdoctoral fellows: The nominee must be currently employed at the University of Waterloo as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CW21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The nominee’s research must be focused on cryptography. The conference or workshop must be related to Cryptography.
Nomination Details: Nominations must be submitted by the student’s/postdoctoral fellow's supervisor. The nomination package should include a brief letter from the nominee's supervisor, affirming that they are enrolled in a full-time graduate program or post-doc fellowship at the University of Waterloo and that the nominee is enrolled/employed with the University at the time of the conference.
Notification and Payment: Applicants will be notified of the decision within 20 business days of submitting their application.
Note: Students are advised to seek additional financial support from their supervisor, department and/or faculty to assist with defraying the costs associated with conference, travel and accommodation expenses, as appropriate.
Note: If your plans change and you will no longer be using your travel funds, please notify your supervisor so that these funds are available for another student.
CryptoWorks21 Fellowship Award
Prize: This award is aimed at supporting academic excellence at the University of Waterloo. CW21 is offering up to CAD $2,000 in financial assistance to professors who wish to facilitate a Teaching Assistant (TA) buyout for their students, subject to approval from the home department.
Basis for Judging: Submissions will be evaluated based on the students' commitment to the CW21 program.
Eligibility: The nominee must be currently enrolled in a full-time Master/Doctoral program in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CW21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The student's thesis must focus on cryptography.
Nomination Details: Nominations must be submitted by the student’s supervisor.
Notification: Applicants will be notified of the decision within 20 business days of submitting their application.
