CryptoWorks21 is offering three awards to support the academic excellence of its members. These awards have been made possible through generous donations from the Royal Bank of Canada, the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, and BTQ Inc., all aimed at promoting and advancing excellence in cryptography and security. CryptoWork’s21 Outstanding Paper Award
Prize: Each award includes a cash prize of CAD $2,000 and a certificate for the Outstanding Student Paper Award.
Basis for Judging: Submissions will be evaluated based on originality, clarity, and their potential impact on practical applications or theoretical foundations of cryptography and the nominee’ commitment to the CryptoWorks21 program.
Eligibility:
- For students:
Eligible candidate is the primary contributors of an accepted/published paper who was student at the University of Waterloo at the time of the original submission/publication. Students must have participated in at least three CryptoWorks21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the CryptoWorks21 program.
- For postdoctoral researchers:
Eligible candidate is the primary contributors of an accepted/published paper who was hired as a postdoctoral researchers at the University of Waterloo at the time of the original submission/publication. postdoctoral researchers must have participated in at least three CryptoWorks21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the CryptoWorks21 program.
Nomination Details: Nominations must be submitted by the nominee’s supervisor. The paper must be accepted at a conference or journal prior to submitting the nomination. Each advisor may submit only one nomination. The nomination package should include a brief letter from the nominee’s supervisor, affirming that the results presented are substantially the nominee’s own work and to confirm that the nominee was a enrolled at the University of Waterloo at the time of submission.
Notification: Applicants will be notified of the decision within 20 business days of submitting their application.
CryptoWork’s21 Conference Award
Awards are available to encourage Cryprowork’s21 members to participate in an academic cryptography related conference or summer school and engage in academic dialogue within their field of study and research.
Prize: each award includes travel expenses for one recipient. This covers round-trip coach airfare (minimum fare), conference registration, and up to four nights at conference-rate hotel accommodations for a three-day conference, or up to five nights for a four-day conference, for a total award of up to CAD $2,500.
Basis for Judging: Submissions will be evaluated based on the nominee’s commitment to the CryptoWorks21 program.
Eligibility:
- For students: The nominee must be currently enrolled in a full-time Master/Doctoral program in department of Electrical & Computer Eng, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CryptoWorks21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The student's thesis must have focused on cryptography. The conference or workshop must be related to Cryptography.
- For postdoctoral researchers: The nominee must be currently employed at the University of Waterloo as a postdoctoral researchers in department of Electrical & Computer Eng, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CryptoWorks21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The nominee’s research must be focused on cryptography. The conference or workshop must be related to Cryptography.
Nomination Details: Nominations must be submitted by the student’s/postdoctoral researcher’s supervisor. The nomination package should include a brief letter from the nominee’ supervisor, affirming that he/she/they is enrolled in a full-time graduate program or post doc fellowship at the University of Waterloo and that the nominee continues to be enrolled/employed in the program at the University of Waterloo at the time of the conference. .
Notification and Payment: Applicants will be notified of the decision within 20 business days of submitting their application.
Note: Students are advised to seek additional financial support from their supervisor, department and/or faculty to assist with defraying the costs associated with conference, travel and accommodation expenses, as appropriate.
Note: If your plans change and you will no longer be using your travel funds, please notify CWs21 program so that these funds are available for another student.
CryptoWork’s21 Fellowship Award
Prize: This award is aimed at supporting academic excellence at the University of Waterloo. CWs21 offering up to CAD $2,000 financial assistance to professors who wish to facilitate a Teaching Assistant (TA) buyout for their students subject to approval from home department.
Basis for Judging: Submissions will be evaluated based on the students commitment to the CryptoWorks21 program.
Eligibility: The nominee must be currently enrolled in a full-time Master/Doctoral program in department of Electrical & Computer Eng, Applied Mathematics, Combinatorics & Optimization, Computer Science, Pure Mathematics or Physics and Astronomy. The nominee must have participated in at least three CryptoWorks21 training workshops and demonstrate commitment to the program. The student's thesis must focus on cryptography.
Nomination Details: Nominations must be submitted by the student’s supervisor.

Note. award recipients who do not end up attending the conference are required to notify CWs21 immediately by email to arrange for repayment of funds awarded.
