Professor Emeritus status

Background

As approved by Senate on March 1994 and reviewed July 2003, the award of Professor Emeritus/a is made to individuals under the following conditions:

  1. The honorary award shall be granted automatically upon retirement, regardless of rank, and continue for life. The award shall carry no duties or obligations on the part of the individual or on the part of the University.
  2. The faculty member shall have served the University for a period of time, normally 15 years.

Services and privileges, beyond those extended to all retired faculty members, are at the discretion of the appropriate Department Chair and Faculty Dean, to be determined on a case-by-case basis.

Nominations of persons with fewer than 15 years of service will be considered by the President, after which a recommendation for approval will be made to Senate.

Overview of Internal Process

An internal process is needed to clarify the way in which exceptional nominations for Professor Emeritus/a designation outside of normal conditions are reviewed prior to recommendation to Senate.

  1. Only exceptional cases will be considered by the President outside of normal conditions for the Professor Emeritus/a designation. The burden of responsibility for demonstrating a nominee meets the merit of the designation will fall with the nominating Department/School and Faculty.
  2. Consideration will be given based on strong support from the Department/School and Faculty, contributions made throughout the nominee’s career, late career stage recruitment of the nominee to the University of Waterloo, and evidence of continued excellence.
  3. The Provost will review and approve nominations submitted by the Dean to the Director, Faculty Relations at avpfpp@uwaterloo.ca.
  4. Nominations reviewed and approved by the Provost will be directed to the President.
  5. Nominees deemed to be deserving of the designation of Professor Emeritus/a outside of normal conditions by the President will be recommended to the Senate for approval.
