Growing up in Manitoba to a family involved in agriculture, Meghan was interested from a young age in the issues facing food producers in Canada, and around the world. Following a research internship in Malawi in 2015, Meghan was inspired to focussed her undergraduate thesis research on Conservation Agriculture’s effect on resilience among smallholder farmers in Kenya and Zimbabwe. Meghan is particularly interested in global food governance, the integration of sustainable food production and food security, and the role of youth in food production in Canada, and around the world.
Meghan holds an Advanced Degree in Global Political Economy from the University of Manitoba.
Following graduation Meghan worked at the University of Manitoba as a Research Assistant under Dr. Annette Desmarais (Canada Research Chair in Human Rights, Social Justice and Food Sovereignty). As a RA she was involved in several research projects including an analysis of the National Farmers Union of Canada’s involvement in protesting the closure of Canada’s Federal Prison Farm Program, and a study of food insecurity among post-secondary students at the University of Manitoba. More recently she conducted field research on the challenges and motivations of young farmers in Manitoba.
Meghan has also worked as a research consultant with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, based out of Winnipeg, MB.
