GIVS Tote Bag Design Competition

Graduates in Vision Science (GIVS) are very pleased to announce the launch of a "tote bag design competition" as part of our GIVS fundraiser event this term! 

GIVS would like to invite all members of the UWOVS community (faculty members, optometry staff, optometry students, residents, post-docs, researchers and grad students) to exercise your artistic eyes and create a design that represents the entire UWOVS community. Submissions are allowed both from individuals and from groups! 

The winner for the best design will receive a $50 MasterCard gift card. All other submissions will be entered in a draw for a $15 MasterCard gift card. The winning design will then be screen printed onto a durable cotton tote bag and available for purchase (more details on ordering tote bags to come in late November). Important dates:

  1. Competition Launch: October 24th, 2022
  2. Submission deadline: November 8th, 2022 at noon (12:00 pm)
  3. Results announcement: by November 11th, 2022

Design requirements:

  1. The design should be compatible with a cream-colour tote bag (see illustration in our poster above).
  1. The design should be relevant to the entire UWOVS community (optometry and research). You can include the text "University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science" OR "UW School of Optometry and Vision Science". The School and GIVS logos will be added to two corners of tote bags when manufacturing. 
  2. Thenumber of colours used in the design must be limited to no more than fourNo colour gradients will be allowedPlease note that black is considered a colour as well. 
  3. The size of the design should be around 25.4 cm×25.4 cm (10 inch×10 inch), suitable for printing on the front of tote bags. The back of tote bags will be left blank. 
  4. Please use the highest resolution possible, ideally 300 lpi (lines per inch) or 300 dpi (dots per inch). Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator is recommended. 

Submissions:

  1. Designs should be submitted in ​.PNG or .TIFF formats to optgivs@uwaterloo.ca by the deadline stated above. Please use “GIVS tote bag design submission” as the email subject; you may also simply click on this link to send an email. Any submissions after the deadline will not be considered for competition. Please reach out for any questions relating to the file format. 
  2. Designs can be submitted by individuals or as groups. Please include the full name(s) of the designer(s) in the email body. All faculty members, optometry staff, optometry students, residents, post-docs, researchers and grad students are encouraged to participate in the competition.
  3. In case of multiple submissions from the same person/group, only the latest submission before deadline will be considered.
  4. After submission, please retain your raw designs in case other formats are required for manufacturing purposes.
  5. GIVS Council will review and vote for the best design to represent the UWOVS community following the submission deadline. Council members who have submitted a design will not be involved in the voting process. The winners for the best design and the draw will then be announced by the date specified above.
