Universities and Action on Global Climate Change: Exploring Universities’ Contributions

Wednesday, December 1, 2021

In late October, as part of the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom’s series of global webinars on climate action, Waterloo’s Associate Vice-President, International – Prof. Ian Rowlands – led a session entitled, ‘International, inter-university collaboration on global climate change’.

As a former Commonwealth Scholar, Ian was invited by the Commission to lead a session with a global audience. Ian’s presentation provides a broad survey of the various means by which universities are advancing, and could continue to advance, sustainable development goals and solutions. The session also highlighted critical work being done by many at the University of Waterloo, which can be viewed in a recording of Ian’s webinar. Specifically, Ian highlighted work by the Sustainability Office (18:48 and 24:22), Sustainable Development Solutions Network Canada (21:25), the Interdisciplinary Centre on Climate Change (30:00), and the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Energy (34:07) in the webinar. Waterloo’s work on climate change continues with various partners at multiple scales in numerous places.
