Call for all interested campus stakeholders to the first meeting about operationalizing Waterloo’s membership in the Scholars at Risk Network!
The University of Waterloo’s commitment to facilitate free inquiry and expression is demonstrated by various actions – for instance, its recent membership in the Scholars at Risk (SAR) Network. Earlier this year, Waterloo joined over 600 members worldwide taking action to help protect scholars and to promote academic freedom. This global community arranges positions of sanctuary at institutions in the network for those forced to flee from persecution in their local communities.
AVP-I Ian Rowlands is calling on interested colleagues across campus to participate in the first meeting being held to present an overview of the Network and to discuss ways in which Waterloo can operationalize our membership.
We will be welcoming interim co-chairs of the Scholars at Risk Canada section National Steering Committee, Natasha Nobell, Manager, Global Partnerships and Faculty Relations, University of British Columbia and Mirja Trilsch, Professeure, Département des sciences juridiques, Université du Québec à Montréal, as guest speakers to discuss their experiences building a Scholars at Risk action plan on their respective campuses. There will be a Q-and-A as well as open discussion to follow.
