There were three busses in the wine tasting tour. One of the busses was dedicated as the “soccer” bus. This bus was going to stop at fewer wineries in order to make it for the Euro 2008 final between Germany and Spain. Most of the German and Spanish participants were on that bus in addition to Gilbert Laporte who was on board by mistake.

I was also on that bus and remember the trip well. We stopped in a bar somewhere in the middle of California to watch the Germany-Spain match. At that time, the Spanish were not as familiar with winning major soccer championships as they are now. The strongest impression I have from that day is perhaps the reaction from the regular customers: where does this crowd comes from and why are they so excited about something that we do not even know what it is?
