Principal research areas

Kidney triacylglycerol metabolism

We are investigating the reciprocal role of kidney fat metabolism in metabolic syndrome, with an emphasis on diabetes and cardiovascular disease outcomes. Our findings have relevance for the treatment and prevention of chronic kidney disease and associated metabolic sequelae.

Brain phospholipid metabolism

We currently have three principal genes of interest that are highly expressed in the brain. Related health and disease interests include embryological brain development, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, and Charcot-Marie Tooth Disease.

Adipose tissue phospholipid metabolism

What links brain, kidney, and fat tissue? Surprisingly, a high level of expression of certain lipid metabolizing enzymes. There also appears to be communication between these three tissues, with implications for metabolic health. Understanding this interplay is an important theme in our work.
