The first Navigating Your Careers (NYC): Canadian Celebration of Women in Academia and Industry conference was led by the University of Waterloo’s Women in Mathematics (WiM) Undergraduate Committee and is joined by other student associations including Women in Health Science, and FemPhys. It was hosted on March 8th, 2025 from 9:00 am - 4:30 pm and was aimed to celebrate the achievements of women and gender minorities in Engineering, Health, Mathematics and Science. The conference included guest speakers and workshops spanning various fields within academia and industry. The conference was open to all post-secondary students of all genders and took place at the University of Waterloo.

Initially, NYC targeted at 100 participants, but after the first day of registration, it became clear that there was very strong interest in the conference! With support from various sponsors, the registration was increased to 200! Even with the increased limit, registration filled completely within the first week, showing how strongly students felt they would benefit from attending.

The conference included academic and industry panels, workshops, resume reviews, and workshopping opportunities. It was a great success, and with such strong interest, WiM is excited to host future events to help students inspire their future careers.

Over the last year, volunteers with the Faculty of Mathematics generously contributed nearly 5,800 hours of their time—supporting committees, mentoring students, speaking at events, helping launch initiatives and marking math contests!

In celebration of National Volunteer Week (April 27–May 3) and this year’s theme, “Volunteers Make Waves,” we kicked things off with a special series of volunteer profiles. Throughout the week, we introduced some of the incredible individuals who are making a meaningful impact—both on campus and around the world. 2025 Volunteer Spotlight of the Day Series
