Professors Wenhu Chen and Xi He from the Cheriton School of Computer Science have been named Canada CIFAR AI Chairs. They are among eight leading researchers across Canada who are building a robust artificial intelligence research ecosystem to advance the nation’s leadership in priority areas under the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy at CIFAR.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo and supported by Transformative Quantum Technologies have demonstrated the feasibility of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance diffraction (NMRd) to investigate the lattice structure of crystalline solids on an atomic scale, a feat that had only been possible for larger-scale imaging applications like Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The University of Waterloo ranks fourth in Canada and 42nd globally on the QS World University Ranking: Sustainability.

This is the first time that QS has published a global ranking on sustainability and has evaluated 700 institutions on environmental and social impact indicators. The ranking joins a growing list of international higher-education sector efforts to understand how universities impact some of the most prominent and intersectional ecological and societal challenges.

Motivated by an innate sense of curiosity, Dr. Norman Zhou has made significant contributions in many areas of engineering over the past 24 years.

While he began his career as a Waterloo Engineering professor focused on advanced welding and joining technologies, his inquisitive nature also led to advancements in fields including nanomaterials fabrication and laser processing of shape memory alloys.

Dominic Barton, the University of Waterloo's 11th chancellor, has committed $1 million to support the next generation of talent at Waterloo.

Barton is a well-known leader in global business and a philanthropist, as well as a key supporter of the University.

“Dominic has created valuable opportunities for our researchers and students during his tenure as chancellor,” says Vivek Goel, president and vice-chancellor. “I’m deeply grateful for his ongoing support, and I’m delighted that he has built on his leadership with this meaningful gift.”

On October 20, the Transformative Quantum Technologies team hosted a quantum showcase and the Quantum for Health (Q4Health) pitch competition where students and researchers demonstrated opportunities for quantum to advance health.

The daughter of two professional violinists, Danielle Grabke was exposed to thoughtfully designed environments from a very young age.

Her childhood memories recall many excursions to the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto — she has seen over a dozen performances of the Nutcracker and still finds new ways to love it. What struck her most as a child, though, was how the building itself contributed to her enjoyment of what she was watching.

When Deema Awad started her undergraduate studies at Waterloo in 2017, she was following in the footsteps of family members as a Planning student. But she soon realized it was important to follow her own passion and build on her strengths. “I wanted to switch into a program that would not only help me excel but continue to spark the passion that I already had,” she reflects.

Climate change, armed conflict, economic and political instability and natural disasters can all impact food security. And the recent COVID-19 pandemic and global inflation have added additional strain to sustainable food production and food security.
