COVID-19 has presented a challenge unlike anything the University of Waterloo has faced in its history. Campus life has been disrupted, creating uncertainty in students’ lives through the loss of part-time jobs and co-op work terms, travel restrictions, and the struggle to meet unexpected expenses related to housing, food and technology to support online learning.

As health officials in Wuhan, China confirmed thousands of COVID-19 cases, Michelle Zhou (BASc ’14) and John Luo (BMath ’07) wanted to help. In January 2020, Wuhan hospitals needed more medical supplies, and the number of COVID-19 cases were rising rapidly in the region. In the midst of the crisis, Michelle and John collaborated with other volunteers in the University of Waterloo’s Shanghai alumni chapter to organize a charity event that collected donations from their fellow alumni.
“We know that startups have a great capacity to identify opportunities, innovate quickly, and develop market-ready technologies,” said Adrien Côté, executive director of Waterloo's Velocity incubator. “Velocity can help by working with founders to quickly evolve their strategies and product development to rally to this cause.
"We are already working with a number of companies building COVID-19 solutions, and we are ready to work with more.”
The University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) launched a new resource this week called “CEMC at Home”.
The goal of the online tool is to provide a wide variety of fun and educational ways to do math and computer science with kids while they’re at home practicing physical distancing. The resource include games, new problems to solve, applications, videos, pointers to existing materials and more.
