Clone of Badge Day brings girl guides to engineering

As part of this Badge Day event, the girls will meet engineering students and staff and visit five activity stations to learn about different computer skills. They will discover how a computer makes decisions, how information is kept private, learn to code and more.

The badge is part of an initiative of Ontario Network of Women in Engineering (ONWiE) to raise awareness about the engineering profession among girls. Computer skills are a key to success in high school, university and beyond.

A mental health tool kit for millennials

Before Tina Chan began her Health Studies degree at the University of Waterloo, she had never pictured herself as an entrepreneur.

“I had zero interest in entrepreneurship before I connected with the Waterloo community,” Chan laughs. “None at all!”

The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences student had a driving passion was for mental health, not business development. But Waterloo’s startup incubation ecosystem isn’t only about tech: it also fosters social change.

UN Women launches new gender-inclusive HeForShe website

Women, men, transgender people and others who don’t identify as either men or women can now pledge their support for the HeForShe campaign on a revised website that enables greater involvement for everyone regardless of gender identity.

The campaign, launched in 2014 by British actor Emma Watson, was originally designed to engage men in the gender equity movement. The University of Waterloo is a HeForShe IMPACT 10x10x10 champion, part of a select group of businesses, governments and academic institutions leading change globally.

Slow down your typing to improve your writing: study

Researchers from the University of Waterloo asked study participants to type essays using both hands or with only one. Using text-analysis software, the team discovered that some aspects of essay writing, such as sophistication of vocabulary, improved when participants used only one hand to type.

Photo opportunity: Paper airplane toss

The University of Waterloo is hosting its annual paper airplane toss tomorrow, and members of the media are invited to attend this photo opportunity.

The event is part of the 17th annual Fantastic Alumni, Faculty, Staff and Retiree Day. It takes place at the Physical Activities Complex (PAC) on campus on Saturday, January 16. This year's event features the Warriors men's and women's basketball teams playing Brock University.
