While watching the evening news the charismatic weathercaster warns that your area should expect a month’s worth of rain in the coming hours. Should you be worried? Is this climate change? But the weather forecaster is smiling, so it’s probably just some weird weather right?

“Some folks say that ‘global weirding’ would be a better description of what’s happening than climate change,” says Vanessa Schweizer, an assistant professor in Waterloo’s Department of Knowledge Integration.

As quantum mechanics fundamentally redefine what is possible in computing, Michele Mosca, co-founder and deputy director of the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo, is working to develop cryptographic tools that will protect the personal information you share over the Internet in the age of quantum computing.

Physicist Raffi Budakian understands the furious excitement about Pluto these days.

In one close swoop earlier this month, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft revealed new things about the dwarf planet. Scientists scurried off to rewrite the Pluto story that had been based on observations from distant Earth since 1930.

For some, it’s building a wind turbine to harness enough energy to race a car. For others, it’s creating a boat out of cardboard and duct tape. For six-year-old Max Griffiths, there isn’t  just one highlight of his first camp experience in 2015 — there  are many.   

Engineering Science Quest, better known as ESQ, celebrates its 25^th anniversary this year. The milestone will be marked July 22 at a breakfast event in Engineering 5’s Sedra Student Design Centre. One of the speakers will be Michelle Miller, who co-founded the ESQ summer camp in the fall of 1990.

Seymour Schulich likes to tell a story about the most important $1,600 of his life.           

The money came to him in 1963 in the form of a scholarship to McGill University’s fledgling MBA program. Schulich’s undergraduate career— first in engineering, then in chemistry—had not been particularly distinguished, so he was pleasantly surprised when McGill offered him a $1,600 scholarship to come back for an MBA. 

The study, which appears in a special mental health issue of Healthcare Management Forum, found that almost one in four psychiatric patients in Ontario hospitals are restrained using control interventions, such as chairs that prevent rising, wrist restraints, seclusion rooms or acute control medications.

The University of Waterloo and the Federation of Students thank the community every year by hosting Waterloo Region's flagship Canada Day Celebration. Last year, the University marked the 30th anniversary of the celebration with more than 60,000 people in attendance. Organizers are looking forward to bringing the community together for another exceptional event this year on Wednesday July 1, 2015.
