With close to 60,000 guests expected, more food trucks than ever before and an expanded roster of free children’s activities, this year is set to be the University of Waterloo’s largest Canada Day celebration yet.

Coming off a spectacular 30th anniversary last year, Waterloo region’s premiere Canada Day celebration is proud to present shining examples of Canadian musical talent. Kim Mitchell, Canadian rock icon and hit machine, and The Strumbellas, a Juno-Award-winning, six-piece, folk pop-grass band, will both perform on the OpenText Stage.

A ceremony to mark the official start of construction of a new residence for undergraduate students at the University of Waterloo will take place this week.

Once complete, the new residence will house more than 500 students, and will enable the University to continue to offer its first-year housing guarantee for undergraduate students.

The innovative, student-focused design is a result of an extensive consultation process with stakeholders to help ensure a happy and productive living environment for its residents.

In April, construction crews began stripping down an old laboratory tucked among the engineering buildings on the University of Waterloo campus.

They are creating a research facility with three different labs, or cells, working toward a common objective: smarter, more energy-efficient automobiles, with reduced emissions.

Matt Rendall, a robotics entrepreneur who got his start at the University of Waterloo, is a finalist for the $100,000 Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC) Young Entrepreneur Award.

The grand prize winner will be selected by a public vote combined with a score from a national committee made up of top Canadian executives.

Victoria Stacey is graduating with a job as the digital media co-ordinator at a Toronto firm and as the founder and editor-in-chief of her own online magazine.

Devon Rizzo is graduating this spring with an engineering degree and a legacy of athletic achievement that includes gold medals and  participation in golf tournaments around the world.

“Golfing for the Warriors has helped me become a better leader. Being a team captain helped me both in the classroom and on the course,” said Rizzo.
