WATERLOO, Ont. (Tuesday, June 26, 2012) – The University of Waterloo today received two prestigious grants designed to enable leading scientists to mentor and train promising young researchers in quantum information science. Professors David Cory and Michele Mosca, both from the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), received grants worth $1.65 million each to pursue unique training programs in cutting-edge quantum research.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, June 25, 2012) – The University of Waterloo is pleased to announce that Nicole Pitre, of Burlington, Ontario, and Nicole Shum, of Burnaby, British Columbia, have been chosen to represent their high schools as inaugural Schulich Leaders.

Originally, only 20 high school students across Canada were to receive the four-year, $60,000 Schulich Leader Scholarships. Due to the overwhelming number and calibre of the nominees, the number of scholarships was doubled to 40.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Thursday, May 31, 2012) – The latest national Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) reveals that in the 2010/2011 school year, 93,870 fewer Canadian youth (Grades 6-12) smoked cigarettes in the past 30 days compared with 2008/2009 data, representing a 2 per cent decline for students in Grades 6-9 (from 7 per cent to 5 per cent) and a 4.5 per cent decline for students in Grades 10-12 (from 21 per cent to 16 per cent). For the younger group, this signifies a return to the lowest rate previously seen (in 2004/2005).

WATERLOO, Ont. (Wednesday, May 30, 2012) - The University of Waterloo’s Department of Geography and Environmental Management is turning 50, and it’s kicking off celebrations with a reunion tomorrow.

The reunion is timed to coincide with the annual meeting of the Canadian Association of Geographers, taking place at Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences, May 28 to June 2. Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are jointly hosting Congress 2012.
