Waterloo graduates embrace change

When Alessia Danelon graduates from mechanical engineering this week, she says she’ll be sitting amongst her people - curious students who like to take risks and push boundaries.

Danelon, who will start a full-time job at Apple Inc. in Northern California in August, says the dynamic culture at Waterloo is a two-way street:  Waterloo encourages innovation and entrepreneurialism, but its renowned co-operative education program actually draws young people hungry for change.

Waterloo, Ont. (Monday, June 10, 2013) – More than 5,400 students will cross the stage at the University of Waterloo's 106th Convocation this week. There will be 4,554 undergraduate and 918 graduate degrees handed out at ceremonies taking place over five days.

Among the honours the university will award are nine honorary doctorates.

Future Waterloo students win prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarships

Lucas Palmer’s average is 99 per cent.

The Windsor high school student is also captain of his varsity volleyball team and he’s organized charity events that raised $11,000. Every student has to log 40 hours of community service to graduate  – Palmer has done 550 hours.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, June 3, 2013) — Two Ontario high school students set to attend the University of Waterloo in September are among the winners of the coveted 2013 Schulich Leader Scholarships.

Lucas Palmer from Windsor and Chloé Simms from Pembroke each won the awards worth $60,000 that go to top students who plan to study in the areas of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. Schulich winners must possess at least two of the following attributes: academic excellence, financial need, or outstanding community, business or entrepreneurial leadership.

WATERLOO, Ont. (Monday, Nov. 12, 2012) - A research project with its roots at the University of Waterloo has found that human activity is raising levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the uppermost layers of the atmosphere.

It is the first hard evidence that such levels are increasing there at a faster rate than can be explained by solar activity or exhaust from rocket launches. The project’s CO2 measurements are reported in the latest issue of Nature GeoScience.
