Brian Luptak and three other students on his fourth-year design team all expected to be hungry for a full-time job when they graduated this week with a degree in mechatronics engineering from the University of Waterloo.

But the four grads began to consider other options, including forming a startup, after they received attention for their design project, a  3D chocolate printer.  Luptak, along with Andy Vopni, Ben Cousins and Nima Majidifar attended the Ontario Centres of Excellence Discovery Conference in Toronto in May. Their innovative technology, that uses chocolate powder to print out any 3D object in chocolate, gained attention from media and investors.

Luptak says the team is still in the early stages of any plans and is taking things in stride: “We don’t have anything to celebrate yet,” he says.
