A new technique that brings magnetic resonance imaging to the nanometer scale with unprecedented resolution will open the door for major advances in understanding new materials, virus particles and proteins that cause diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo used a new type of hardware and numerical algorithms to implement high-precision spin control, which allowed them to image proton spins with a resolution below 2nm.

Eye exams linked to kids’ reading levels

by Victoria Van Cappellen, Faculty of Science

Elementary school children who read below grade level may have challenges with their eyesight even if standard tests show they see 20/20, according to a new study from the University of Waterloo.

The study showed that children with reading challenges may have lower than expected binocular vision test results, something a standard eye exam may overlook.

The University of Waterloo will be a key partner with leading Canadian companies and sectors chosen to help grow our country’s global competitiveness through significant investments in the areas of artificial intelligence (AI) and advanced manufacturing.

As part of the Government of Canada’s $950 million Innovation Supercluster Initiative, Waterloo will take a leading research role in two of the five winning bids announced today. The effort will see researchers and innovators from Waterloo become key contributors in industry-led consortia.
