Brian Doucet – School of Planning
Brian Doucet is an Associate Professor in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo. After thirteen years living and working in the Netherlands, he returned to Canada in 2017. His research focuses on issues of housing, gentrification and neighbourhood change in an international context.
“Secondary suites can represent an important supply of housing for a community. However, they should be seen as part of a wider affordable housing strategy, rather than the ultimate solution to deal with chronic shortages of affordable housing, or long waiting times for social housing. A fair and just housing strategy must also work towards building new non-market forms of housing, such as co-ops, social housing or community land trusts.”

Nancy Worth - Department of Geography & Environmental Management
Dr. Nancy Worth is an Assistant Professor in Geography at the University of Waterloo. She is the lead investigator of the GenY at Home project, www.genyathome.ca, a project that examines why young adults live with their parents in Toronto.
“Thirty-five percent of young adults (age 20-34) in Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge live with their parents, similar to the national average. Moreover, the number of people living with several generations of family is growing. Besides economic reasons for living with parents, for some young adults the intergenerational family is a cultural tradition, while others simply report that they enjoy living at home—sharing the workload and supporting each other."
